Two boys. Two secrets. David Piper has always been an outsider. His parents think he’s gay. The school bully thinks he’s a freak. Only his two best friends know the real truth – David wants to be a girl. On the first day at his new school Leo Denton has one goal – to be invisible. Attracting the attention of the most beautiful girl in year 11 is definitely not part of that plan. When Leo stands up for David in a fight, an unlikely friendship forms. But things are about to get messy. Because at Eden Park School secrets have a funny habit of not staying secret for long …

This book made me cry so much.

As the blurb states, its about two boys with two big secrets.

David Piper has always known he was different. People at school call him a freak, his parents think he’s gay and his only two best friends know the truth. David longs to be a girl. He was born in the wrong body but he doesn’t know how to tell his parents this because how do you tell your parents that you want to be a girl?

Then a new boy comes into school; Leo Denton. He’s quiet and moody and would most probably beat you if you said anything to him. He wants to be invisible and just get on with school or what’s left of it and not get into trouble. But when Leo sees David being picked on, he sticks up for him and they form an unlikely friendship.

Because of that, Leo attracts the attention of the popular girl Alicia, something he didn’t want to do. Especially as he falls for her pretty fast and the pair are making out at every opportunity. But Leo has a secret himself, one that he doesn’t want to get out but lets face it, with enemies at school, its bound too.

Through all the secrets and truths that are revealed, one thing is certain. The unlikely friendship between Leo and David grows stronger and they help each other out in a lot of ways…

Not the greatest summary I know, but I really don’t want to give anything away regarding Leo’s secret. If I’m being honest I had a little inkling as to what it was but when he has his flashbacks, I suspected something different.

This is the first transgender book I’ve ever read and it will probably be the last. I don’t mean that horribly I just mean that the book was so good and so heartwarming and heart breaking at times that it’s ruined me for other transgender books (I probably will read other books on this subject though!)

Lisa Williamson has written two characters that you can really get involved with. From the first page I was caught in David and his desperate need to become a girl. I felt for him. He was alone in this, despite having told is two best friends, but no one else understood him. No one else can understand the longing to be something that your not. He was a character to really lose your emotions too.

Then there’s Leo. As I mentioned I had an inkling as to what his secret was before it was revealed, but damn he broke my heart too. Like David he was alone on everything too and had a lot more secrets than David. When they go to find Leo’s real dad and the scenes that followed, god I was in tears! I just can’t believe how cruel some parents can be. I’m glad he had David there, or Kate, as he called himself that weekend.

When everything comes out about Leo, I was heartbroken. Especially with how everyone treated him. I wanted to punch every single one of them who said the horrible things. I don’t understand how people can’t understand things and have to be horrible to others just because they are different.

As I said I got involved with this book!

I’m not transgender so I can’t imagine how bad it must be to be trapped in a body that you shouldn’t have but Lisa managed to convey it perfectly.

Everything was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time and I don’t think I can convey how much you need to read this book. Yeah my review isn’t doing it much justice I know, but honestly its such an amazing book. One of my best reads of 2016! (yes I’m way behind on reviews!)

A definite must read

And a thank you to Adam who brought this book for me for my birthday.

Blurb:

The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves at odds with those who don’t.

With her heart sworn to the warrior-prince by her side, and her fealty pledged to the people she is determined to save, Aelin will delve into the depths of her power to protect those she loves. But as monsters emerge from the horrors of the past, and dark forces become poised to claim her world, the only chance for salvation will lie in a desperate quest that may mark the end of everything Aelin holds dear.

In this breathtaking fifth installment of the New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series, Aelin will have to choose what — and who — to sacrifice if she’s to keep the world of Erilea from breaking apart.

OMG WHY DOES SARAH PLAY WITH MY FEELS SO MUCH?!?!

Aelin is on her way to get her throne back but Aelin has a lot to prove herself. She can’t get her throne, not yet so she goes off to find an army and to get her old enemies back into her good books. By her side is Rowan, Aedion and Lysandra. But things are happening back at Ardalan too. An attack on the palace and its town by the witches looks like its the end for Dorian Havillard but, for a life debt, Manon Blackbeak let’s him escape, basically putting the death sentence above her head.

Dorian ends up with Aelin and the others in Skulls Bay where he meets Captain Rolfe, (who we’ve met in Assassins Blade.) At first he’s reluctant to help Aelin, considering the past when he knew her as Celeana, but with the persuasion of the others, including Aedion’s father,  Gavriel,  and Fenrys, Captain Rolfe agrees.

With Manon in front of the witches, trying to lie her way out of what happened, Its Asterin the witches ask to pay the price of Manon’s betrayal. But Manon knows the truth about her heritage and things are about to happen. Going against her Grandmother and the other witches, Manon buys her Thirteen time to run while she attacks her Grandmother. But it does go wrong for Manon. Her thirteen escape but she gets injured. Jumping on Abraxos’ back, she manages to flew, telling him to get her safety.

Which just so happens to be the boat that Aelin is on.

Everyone manages to put their differences aside, after a few heated moments between them, and agree to put aside their differences and help one another.

Meanwhile, Elide Lochlan is trying to find Celeana to give her the thing that Kaltain Rompier gave to her. During her journey she comes across Lorcan, the demi fae whose Maeve’s right hand man. He still has his grudge against Aelin, still determined to kill her. The pair he of on the wrong foot but after a while they start to appreciate each other and Lorcan actually finds a softer side to him. Their journey is also leading them towards Aelin and the others but there’s a price over Lorcan’s head… One the Gavriel and Fenrys must obey.

When they all get together, there’s fighting and snarling but they do manage to put that behind them too, especially with Maeve’s fleet on the way.

The fight is big, like epic big! Manon and Aelin learn the truth about Elena and the price she paid for what she did all those years ago. With a heavy heart, Manon and Aelin return. Right into the path of Maeve who has Elide. Aelin knows she has to fight but her powers are depleted after the fight that already happened. Truths are revealed and sacrifices must be done… But who will be the sacrifice and who will have their heart broken?

Okay I know the summary isn’t that great but I can’t give stuff away.

Aelin is just as great as ever and her relationship with Rowan is stronger than ever. Especially that scene on the beach! Together they are a force to be reckoned with and Rowan will put his life on the line for her. Knowing the truth about them broke my heart. I’m not ruining it but god! Maeve is a bitch! What she did was horrible! And a broken hearted Rowan is like a sucker punch in the feels

Lysandra and Aedion are getting closer too, not sure if its going down that way but I kinda hope so, although what happened at the end and what Lysandra was going to do, kinda makes it hard in them getting together. I love Lysandra’s shape shifting abilities and how she help Aelin in anyway she can. I did want to slap Aedion a few times, especially when he kept doubting everything Aelin did.

Manon and Dorian! OMG Manorian! God damn I’ve wanted them to get together since they first met! Dorian has grown a bit more in this book, embracing his powers and showing that he can be a leader. They tried to keep him out of harms away a lot but he showed he was strong by using his powers. Manon has always been a favourite character for me. Unlike the other witches, she kinda has a conscience, thinks about things before she follows and questions things. I like how Manon and Aelin sort of got a friendship going between them and I love how Manon and Dorian snipe and tease each other. Can’t wait to see what happens to those two in the last book.

Elide and Lorcan… God the cranky fae finally unthawed! The dynamic between those two! At first I thought I was imaging it between them but they’ve got chemistry. I liked watching Lorcan unthaw and realising that there is a life outside of Maeve. He grew on me a lot. Except for the end when I thought BASTARD! But I got a feeling something is going to happen in the last book and he did feel genuinely upset about what he’d done after he learnt the truth. I hope we get to see more Elide and Lorcan in book 6.

Fenrys and Gavriel are great. They may have been sworn to Maeve but I loved how they went onto the side of Aelin. Gavriel is trying to make amends with Aedion and I kinda wish he would just listen to him. Fenrys was great, kinda think he had a little thing for Aelin, but I’m sure Rowan would have shut it down haha. Fenrys can winnow, something that happens in the ACOTAR books so I’m thinking something is going on there.. We’ll have to wait and see I suppose!

Overall this book tore me apart, put me back together and then tore me apart all over again. Damn it Maas why do you do this?!?! Why do you do this?!?!

The ending to the book was tore me apart! I just… I can’t.

This is the reason why Sarah J Maas is my favourite all time author because she can make you feel so many things and she transports you into her world from the first page and the men…THE MEN!! GOD! haha

If you’ve read the TOG books then definetly make sure you have tissues when you read this book, if you haven’t read the books then please do. You won’t be disappointed!

Can’t believe the next book is the last one! I better have a happy Aelin and Rowan ending!
