Summer Shadows (Benedicts 6) by Joss Stirling

Amongst the secret and lies, will love survive? Summer lives under a terrible shadow. It drains her, manipulates her and threatens to steal her future. A high-stakes mission offers a temporary escape. She must use her mind-shadowing abilities to hunt down her target and find the truth. Hal Robinson is a soldier. He does not get distracted. He wins. But what Hal wants begins to shift once he meets Summer. They must learn to trust each other if they are going to protect the Savant community. But will their secrets allow them to find a happy ending of their own?

I’m actually quite sad the series is now over! No more Benedict boys!

Summer lives with her mother and father in their big house but no one is allowed to go around. She lives with a savant that’s the worst kind. An emotional vampire. A savant that feeds off the emotions of others just to get a fix. Her father keeps her as safe as he can and has plans for Summer when she goes to university. But its not her plans.

When she’s offered the chance to go to the Middle East to help save Victor Benedict, who has gone over their to find his soul finder, Summer agrees, needing some time away from her family.

What she doesn’t count on is the Robinsons, especially the youngest brother Hal.

He’s obnoxious and arrogant and actually has no savant powers of his own. When the pair meet you can tell its going to be a love hate relationship, but after spending some time with Summer, Hal begins to thaw and lets her in. But Hal doesn’t have any savant powers so why, when Summer enters his mind, does she find out that they are Soul Finders?

But this isn’t as easy as everyone else’s because at this moment in time she wants nothing to do with him. But when they are captured and mistaken for Benedicts, Summer realises that she can’t exactly be apart from her soul finder.

But all the people that Victor has put behind bars over the years are after him, and it’s only a matter of time before they get him. Or will they?

Okay summary sounds lame because I was on a roll and then I completely forgot the plot for a minute and forgot what I was writing haha but I’ll try and explain in the next part.

I enjoyed Summer in this book. We’ve seen bits of her in the last few Benedict books and I was always curious of her. We got to see her family life and how bad it is. I felt sorry for her brother’s story too. Her mother, even though you wanted to hate her, you couldn’t because she was stuck in her own nightmare too. Her father tried to help but everything was left to Summer. I’m glad she took the chance to go to the Middle East, to get away from everything (even though it came with a cost.) She got the chance to use her mind powers, even though she was always wary of using them. I loved the relationship between her and Hal and how they bickered so much when they first saw each other.

Hal was obnoxious but he mellowed the more time he spent with Summer which I’m glad about. Yeah he did treat her badly in a few scenes but Summer always gave it back at him. I liked how he stepped up and realised that his savant powers could actually help Summer. They made quiet a team when they were together.

And then there was Victor! The one Benedict IĀ was desperate for him to get his happy ending. It took six books but FINALLY! I always felt bad for him having to see his younger brothers and two older brothers finding theirs before he did and I was so happy when he found Atoosa! She’s great and I loved how he was with her. We’ve always seen Victor as moody and hard but with her he was cute and soft and GAH!

As Victor works with the FBI, he’s put away many bad savants, including some we’ve seen in previous books and I enjoyed seeing the epic finale come down to all of the bad guys against Victor and his family and extended family. I imagined the scenes in my head as a superhero movie!

Of course one of the Benedicts gets hurt… Okay kind of almost dies and my heart was in my throat for a little while there. But you’ll have to read the book to find out which one it is šŸ˜›

Summer Shadows was the perfect ending to a great series and I’m really sad to see it go but you know Joss there are two Robison brothers that have yet to find their soul finders so maybe, just maybe you could write about those two…? *HINT HINT CHEESY SMILE HINT HINT*

A Shade of Vampire series by Bella Forrest Book Review

Finally I got a book series read before I got too tired from work to do anything!

So I got sent this series for Christmas from my fangirl twin bestie and parabatai from across the pond Stephanie, with then recommendation that I’d love the series…

And I did!

Also the blurb’s I’m using are from Goodreads so the actual book blurbs may differ….

The greatly anticipated conclusion to Derek and Sofia’s journey!

Everything Sofia believed to be true has crumbled before her very eyes…

In this explosive finale, secrets will be revealed, loyalties tested and trust broken.

Are you ready to return to The Shade?

To be honest these were the first self published books I’ve ever really liked. That sounds so bad too!

These books though were addictive from start to finish.

The first book was a little too short though. Even though it offered insight into the type of people Sofia and Derek were it didn’t give you a sense of how much time had passed. I thought that time had only gone on for a few weeks at least but in reality it had been three months but seeing as this was her first ever book it was still written really well.

Derek is a troubled vampire, struggling to either go into the light or let darkness take him over. He’s been in a sleep for the past 400 years with the help of a witch. He thinks the sleep is eternal, that he will never again have to unleash the monster that he once was. Then along comes Sofia Claremont, whose kidnapped on her 17th birthday and taken to the Shade, where she is to become apart of Derek Novak’s harem… But what she doesn’t know is that her and Derek together will complete a prophecy, that they are stronger together than they are apart and that she will ultimately turn her back on all that she knew to save the Shade, the vampires and humans she’s become friends with and Derek.

Of course like all YA fiction the heroine has to lose people along the way. This happen in book 2 (no spoilers fromĀ me who it is!) and quite a few times throughout the book, but that’s what makes the heroine of our book stronger, that’s what makes her fight.

She also has a crazy mother who is determined to ruin her life just like Sofia ruined hers. So, as a deal her mother made a long time ago, Sofia has been promised to pyscho vamp Boris Maslen. Honestly that guy is mental! He’s already had VivienneĀ (Derek’s twin sister) a long time ago as partĀ of another promise so Derek isn’t going toĀ rest until Sofia is back in his arms.

There’s the Elder vamps, pyscho witch turned vampire who brainwashes Derek into believing that he’s in love withĀ her, there’s a cure to Vampirism (It’s pure genius how BellaĀ came up with it!) andĀ a few kidnappings alongĀ the way, a marriage, other realms and a whole host of other stuff it was hard to imagine Derek and Sofia EVER having a happy ending!

Honestly though these books were amazing and just like I do with other books I went through some feels (Not as much as some books but I did have a few minor feels) and sometimes I got frustrated with the characters just like I usually do with other books haha.

Any weaknesses to these books I hear you ask…

Well sometimes they could be a little sappy with their love and in one book Derek really annoyed me because it was almost like he’d become too complacent when he should have been fighting instead we had his inner monologue a bit too often regarding Sofia but other than that I can’t really fault the books.

I do really really wish a bigĀ publishing agency would pick up these books because they are amazing and I want other people to like them and for Bella to have even more book sales and for her to be on a par with HoN and Twilight and VA and Bloodlines and every other vampire book that I’ve read and haven’t read.

So go check out these books! If you like Vampires you won’t be disappointed!
