“Aerity…” Her father paused as if the words he was forming pained him. “I must ask you to sacrifice the promise of love for the sake of our Kingdom.”
She could only stare back, frozen.
When a strange beast terrorizes the kingdom of Lochlanach, fear stirs revolt. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona – kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.
Princess Aerity knows her duty to her kingdom but cannot bear the idea of marrying a stranger… until a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention. There’s no denying the unspoken allure between them… or his mysterious resentment.
Paxton is not the marrying type. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He is determined to keep his focus on the task at hand – ridding the kingdom of the beast – but the Princess continues to surprise him, and the perilous secrets he’s buried begin to surface.
I do love Wendy Higgins and was excited to read this book. The book is based on a Brothers Grimm fairytale but I haven’t read a lot of Grimm fairytales so I’m not that familiar with it.
The opening of the book starts with Aerity’s cousin Wyneth and her betrothed enjoying a few moments peace together before tragedy strikes. A great beast kills him and Wyneth has to run to safety, leaving him behind.
With Wyneth in a state of mourning Aerity will try anything to get her to talk to her, or at least get her out of her room but when news of the beast strikes again and again everyone knows they have to try and kill it. And that means Aerity sacrificing the promise of love to marrying a complete stranger.
Paxton Seabolt is a local villager who is hiding a secret, the people of the village blame The Lashed for everything that happens and they blame the beast on them. Paxton is fed up of The Lashed being blamed for everything that happens. He joins the wild hunt with his brother Tiern. Paxton wants to kill the beast but he doesn’t want to marry the princess, despite the fact she seems to favour him. But will he change his mind?
As the hunt goes on and the hunters numbers grow less and less, they know that this is no ordinary beast. When Aerity, Wyneth and Aerity’s younger sister Nixie have a swimming race with Paxton, Tiern and another hunter Leif, the girls manage to uncover the truth about the beast and who is behind it all.
As its a race against time to try and kill the beast, Aerity hopes that Paxton will kill the beast but will he?
And will everyone find out about Paxton’s secret?
Aerity is a real princess. She reminded me of the classic Disney princesses, all girly and trusting and full of life and has strong feelings about love. Nothing wrong with that, it was a change from the kick ass Emma in TDA. Obviously that’s where the Disney Princess comparisons stop because she can also shoot a bow and arrow. She reminded me a little of Merida clashed with any classic Disney Princess.
She sacrifices a lot in the book and I just wanted her to have a happy ending but seeing as there is going to be a second book, I’ll hopefully get that then 🙂
Paxton is a manly man. He’s a hunter and knows what he wants and has a reputation to boot. He’s sexy though and you can’t help but love him. Even though he pushes Aerity away he can’t help but be enamored by her and she surprises him all the time. He loves her. He just needs to admit it.
Wyneth was in mourning for a lot of the book but she did have a steamy moment with another hunter, even if it made her feel as guilty as hell. I hope she can hurt a little less in the next book.
Lief is a cocky prince who everyone obeys and loves, all except Aerity that is. I hope we get to see more about him in the next book, he seems like an interesting character and I want to see more between him and Wyneth 😉
Overall the book was really good and kept uou guessing. I liked Paxton’s secret and I did kinda guess it but it made a good plot twist. This one mainly focused around the hunt and trying to find out the beast and the history of The Lashed and Eurona and all that but damn I wanted more steamy kissing scenes!
I’m hoping the next one will have more steamy kissing moments!
And the ending with another beast! Damn Wendy… don’t do that to me!
Next book now please! 🙂
