The Maze Runner by James Dashner book review

Just… wow… just… wow

When the doors of the lift crank open, the only thing Thomas can remember is his first name. But he’s not alone. He’s surrounded by boys who welcome him to the Glade, an encampment at the centre of a bizarre and terrible maze.

Like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they came to be there, or what’s happened to the world outside. All they know is that every morning when the walls slide back they will risk everything to find out.

It start with a boy in a box. Then you hear voices and the box opens. The only thing he knows is his name; Thomas.
The other boys welcome him to the group but some are skeptical of him. Thomas can’t think of anything other than his name… but he knows something… he’s been here before.

When Thomas arrives that’s when things start going wrong. A week later another box arrives… this time with a girl inside… and she has a message in her hand that reads; Everything is going to change. Not only that but the first word out of her mouth is “Thomas.” Everyone is wondering who the hell they are.
And then Thomas runs out into the Maze just as the doors are closing to save two Gladers who are stuck out there… breaking the number one rule… Don’t be out there in the dark.
While there he faces the Grievers and with help from Minho manages to trick them by falling off the cliff.

When the doors open the following morning, the boys are shocked to see that they survived the Maze. Something that has never happened before.

Then comes a series of events: The girl wakes up, Alby and Gally warn the others that Thomas is dangerous and to not go back into the real world, the doors stay open at night with a hoard of Grievers entering the Glade and picking one boy off at a time.

Then Thomas deliberately goes and gets himself stung by one… just so he can remember things about the past and what he finds out is a way out of the Maze… but sacrifices will have to be made…

This book had me hooked from the beginning. I had no idea what was going to happen from one chapter to the next. Just when you thought you were onto something, another bombshell was dropped and your left shouting “What!” At the end of almost every chapter (well I did anyway)

I like the character of Thomas. He’s pretty cool for the Greenie and you can sense that he’s the one that’s going to figure something out… you just don’t know what that something is.

And then Newt and Minho… they are the best. Even though they have their doubts you can see that they trust Thomas’ decisions.

And Teresa… I need to know what her and Thomas are to each other!

Its a great book and one that leaves you wondering just what the hell is going on. You can’t predict nothing in this book and unlike many other YA Dystopian novels that are in the first person so you can see first hand what they think and feel, this one is in Third person which makes it interesting because other than their reactions to things you don’t get inside info from them.

I loved this book and I wanted to take my time reading it, even though I desperately wanted to rush through it.

Its a definite must read and a definite 5 out of 5 stars!

I can’t wait for the movie! The trailer looks AMAZING! And totally captures the images you have in your head when reading the book!

The trailer! ^
