Midnighters The Secret Hour by Scott Westerfeld

I finished this book last night 🙂 it took me a while to read; not because I didn’t like it, but because I was writing my own book 🙂

As the new girl at Bixby High School, Jessica Day expected some unwelcome attention. What she didn’t expect was to feel an instant connection to a stranger in the corridor…

Who is thks boy dressed in black? And why can she feel his eyes following her wherever she goes?

The answers will have to wait until the sun goes down, for here in Bixby, midnight is the time for secrets; secrets that Jessica is going to find out, whether she wants to or not.

From the first chapter you’re drawn into the world of Rex, the strange boy who dresses in black and cannot bare sunlight… initial reaction? Vampire. But no.
Then you meet Jessica, the new girl who, right away Rex is drawn to. But Rex and his two friends, Dess and Melissa, have no idea what she is. She isn’t midnight, she has a more of a daylight vibe but yet she’s easily recognised as one of their own.
Then comes midnight. Where everything freezes and Jessica believes she is dreaming. But its not a dream. When it happens again Jessica meets the Slithers and the Psychokitty and is nearly killed, until she’s saved by Rex, Dess and Melissa.
Then the truth comes out: there isn’t 24 hours in a day. But 25. And only a select few get to be awake for it.
Then there’s the things that are trying to kill Jessica in the 25th hour, the fact that they are averse to metal and afraid of 13 letter words… and that’s not all.
Jessica then meets Jonathan. Another guy in her school whose also a midnighter but Rex never mentioned him…
Then comes the fact that they all have powers… Dess can do anything with numbers, Melissa is a mindcaster, Rex is a seer and Jonathan can fly (only in the secret hour) but what’s Jessica’s talent? What does the Darklings want with her? Why are they trying to kill her? And above all… what are the secrets to Bixby being the centre of everything?

I really liked this book. It was different. Writing about a secret hour that only a few people now about and fighting Darklings is kind of awesome. Not to mention the powers too haha.

No one has thought of this concept before and I like how Scott Westerfeld through about, how he came to the whole secret hour and the maths and the thirteen letter words that they name their weapons.

I like the characters too. Jessica is believable as the new girl who gets dragged into this whole secret world. And she gets into it pretty quick and manages to adapt… even if things are trying to kill her.
And Jonathan… in his geeky, I can fly in the secret hour vibe he’s really hot haha. And perfect for Jessica.
I like Dess… out of all of them I have a feeling that she’s going to be the one to figure out Bixby and all the stuff to do with everything!

And then there’s Rex and Melissa… I can’t quite put my finger on them… something is up with Rex… I have that kind of feeling. And Melissa… yeah okay so the life of a mindcaster is going to be tricky but she is kind of a bitch and somehow she’s got a grudge with Jessica… I don’t know why either… well I do but she’s still averse to her at the end aswell.

So yeah I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to delve into the second book because I have a feeling more secrets will be revealed.

Overall 4 out of 4 stars
