Books to Movies 5!

I know this one is a little late in coming… I had alot of things on my mind and work to do and all that razzamataz… but now I’m back and this one is all about….

              The Hunger Games

“So whats The Hunger Games?” I hear you cry… well I shall tell you.

The Hunger Games is a 2008 sci-fi dystopian novel by American writer Suzanne Collins.
The story is narrated by 16 year old Katniss Everdeen who lives in the nation of Panem.
The nation is split into 12 districts and all of them are run by The Capitol. They exercise political control over the rest of the nation. The president of the nation is President Snow. The Hunger Games are an annual event, in which one boy and one girl aged between 12 and 18, are chosen from each district surround the Capitol. They are selected by lottery… in which a Capitol representative, Effie Trinket, chooses the names by placing her hand in a big bowl and randomly picking a name.
The Hunger Games are a televised battle in which only one person can be a victor. They must fight to the death.

The Hunger Games won many awards including the California Young Reader Medal and was named one of Publishers Weekly’s “best books of the year” in 2008.

The book is then followed by Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

A film version of the book was done in 2012 with Catching Fire set for release in November 2013 (YAAAAY!!!)

The book has many characters but I’m going to pick the main four in my eyes…

Katniss Everdeen

Katniss is from District 12 which is known for coal mining. It is one of the poorest and least populated district in the nation.
On Reaping Day, Katniss and the rest of the population get ready to hear whose been picked for the Hunger Games. When her 12 year old sister Primrose ‘Prim’ Everdeen has her name picked from the lottery Katniss instantly volunteers to take her place. She then goes to ‘bootcamp’ to learn skills and for the makers of the Hunger Games to mark them on their killing skills.
Katniss has an emotional and life survive moments in The Games and eventually makes an alliance with Rue, a 12 year old from District 11. When Rue has a tragic and sad death (if you don’t cry then your made of stone!) Katniss then joins forces with Peeta Mellark, the other competitor from District 12.
Katniss has an advanced knowledge of hunting and archery and uses these skills to survive.
The pair get close and are both crowned victors after defying the Capitols attempt to force one to kill the other…..

Peeta Mellark

Peeta lives in District 12 along with Katniss. He’s the son of a baker and once saved Katniss’ life by giving her a loaf of burnt bread that he deliberately burnt. The pair never talked to each other until the Games.
While in ‘Bootcamp’ Peeta shows incredible strength and, as he is skillful at decorating the cakes in the bakery, is very good at camouflage.
While in the Games it seems as though Peeta has turned against Katniss by pairing up with competitors. When its revealed that there can be two winners in the Games, Peeta and Katniss join.forces.
They both win the Hunger Games and its revealed that Peeta is madly in love with Katniss and their relationship develops in Catching Fire.

Gale Hawthorne

Gale is also from District 12. Gale lost his father in a mining accident. The same accident that Katniss lost her father in. To help feed his family he hunts illegally in the forest adjacent to District 12. When he’s 14 he meets Katniss and teaches her how to hunt. The pair soon become best friends.
When Katniss volunteers in her sisters place, Gale tells her that he’ll look after her family for her. Gale is also in love with Katniss and its said that the only time Katniss ever truely smiles is when she’s hunting with Gale. Their relationship develops in Catching Fire. (Que love triangle… although it is pretty obvious who she loves!)

Haymitch Abernathy

Haymitch is the only living Hunger Games victor from District 12 having survived the 2nd Quarter Quell (50th Hunger Games)
Haymitch becomes Katniss and Peeta’s mentor when they are picked for the Games.
Haymitch is haunted by his time in the Games and often drinks alot. He’s surly and harsh but on rare occasions he can be understanding. He does after all lead them both to victory… which has major consequences in Catching Fire!

So why read/watch the Hunger Games?

Apart from the fact its brilliant you really do get involved with the characters and take them into your heart. You feel all the emotions they go through and you imagine every part of the Games through Katniss in the book. The movie keeps pretty well to the book (apart from Peeta’s leg in the book….. I’m not telling you anything.. read it!)
Apart from Divergent this another of my favourite dystopian books mainly because you can actually imagine this happening one day in the very near future!
If you love dystopian novels I definitely recommended you read this book. Its brilliant! 😀

Catching Fire is released in November 2013! (I know I’ve already said that but no harm in saying it again!)
